Charly McLion

Karl-Heinz Büchel has been part of the musical landscape since the 1960s. As Charly McLion, he has moved freely between bands, genres and studio projects while retaining a distinctive voice as a guitarist, composer and producer.

In 1970 he became musical director of the rock band Truss. Before that, he had been a member of Cave Dwellers, the first band from Aachen to release a single in the 1960s. His path embraced rock, folk, blues – including touring with blues legend Champion Jack Dupree – as well as R&B, soul and new wave.

In the late 1980s he met electronic music producer Robert Schröder, also known as Dreamstar. Together they formed the duo Double Fantasy and released the album “Universal Ave.” Its melodic electronic sound found lasting recognition among the listeners of the German cult radio programme “Schwingungen”.

At the turn of the millennium, Büchel returned to his solo work with “Nature of the Universe”. The album brought together more than three decades of influences in rich melodies, textures and sounds, with his characteristic guitar playing at its centre. Further projects increasingly led him towards composing and production.

In a 1994 “Schwingungen” listener poll, “Universal Ave.” was voted the second-best electronic music album of all time, behind Jean-Michel Jarre.
